Building WA's clean energy workforce

The Clean Energy Skills National Centre of Excellence is leading a targeted Applied Research Grant Program to advance clean energy training across Western Australia.

With $1.5 million in funding available, the program offered grants of up to $350,000 per project to help education and industry partners co-design practical, scalable training solutions.

Recipients

Grant applications closed on 26 November 2025 and four projects were successful, with awarded grants totalling $1.4 million.

  Project description 

North Metropolitan TAFE, South Regional TAFE, ERGT, Vestas Australia Wind   Technology 

Researching training programs for electricians transitioning to wind turbine installation roles, including remote learning strategies and employment opportunities for local communities. 

South Metropolitan TAFE, RMIT College of Vocational Education, Magellan Power  

Developing an AI-assisted framework to streamline assessment of prior learning and identify bridging courses for tradespeople moving into clean energy roles. 

North Metropolitan TAFE, Central Regional TAFE, Horizon Power

Creating culturally appropriate training models and experiences to support Aboriginal participation in clean energy projects specifically relating to Stand Alone Power grids in remote locations. 

South Metropolitan TAFE, Edith Cowan University, MLEC Group, Magellan Power 

VR-based electrical training to improve access and engagement for apprentices in remote and distributed locations. 

 

About the program

The Applied Research Grant Program supports collaborative projects that address real-world challenges in clean energy training. Projects are focused on one or more of the following:

Remote and distributed learning: that expand access to training across regional and remote areas.

First Nations - Learning on Country: which supports Aboriginal communities to access culturally safe, community-led training.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) supported delivery and assessment: harnessing AI to enhance training delivery and assessment.
